Audition Toad

Don’t mess up your audition! Things you must not do or say in an audition. Don’t become an audition toad!

I have sat on many audition boards in my life and to be honest I have witnessed some very strange characters. But what I would like to share with you in this article is, how not to audition,

From all the bad auditions I have had the privilege to see, you can normally fit the characteristics of a particular person in to one of these four categories

Audition Parrot
Audition Sloth
Audition Ferret
And
Audition Toads!

You may be thinking right now “what on earth is he talking about?” All will be explained.

Ok let’s start with the parrots

Audition Parrot – The Perfect regurgitators

An audition parrot will walk into the room all bright, colourful, chirpy and excited and are usually are very nice people. However when they start to perform their chosen piece and act, you can’t help thinking that you have seen it before? You keep watching bemused and slowly start to realise that actually that your watching Laurence Olivier’s Richard III speech or Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet. Parrots are excellent impersonators and quite often can amaze you with their ability but you can’t help thinking they’ve stolen it and are not acting from the heart. Often you also find when you start speaking to an audition parrot they seem to only say what they think that you want to hear, repeating everything you said previously. It’s a shame because if they only performed from the heart I think there is a lot of potential in them.

Audition Sloth – Calm, collective and useless!

It’s all in the name really; a sloth is a sloth, no more no less. They are conservers not givers.
An audition sloth will enter a room and immediately make people feel tired, giving off no emotion or vibe. When you speak to a sloth there is very little or, quite often, no response and unfortunately the same goes for their performance, lethargic- no emotion. They don’t experiment or push boundaries with either their voice or physically. Quite often sloths don’t really want to be in the room, they feel forced or pressured to exert their energy into acting and have no real passion in the subject. I think sloths should reconsider their career choices!

Audition Ferrets- OTT is an understatement!

Now ferrets, even though they have many bad points you still have to love them! Audition ferrets are those who enter a room as if it were the first time they have opened their eyes! Everything is new and exciting, which is good… but can be very scary for the other person watching! You try to talk to a ferret and they are so high on adrenaline that you can’t get a word in edgeways, they’re absolutely mad! When it comes to their performance they don’t seem to concentrate- every thing is OTT (over the top), loud and un-subtle, but they do make you smile and yes there is some hope in there. Quite often ferrets do mature with time and if you’re lucky enough to see them for a second time their performance is calmer and they seem to shine- just a shame it wasn’t the first time.

Now I will cringe when I write the next paragraph! Right...

Audition Toads!

Audition Toads I despise them, ugly, slimy, selfish, bland, and very, very, very infuriating. – Can you tell I don’t like them!

However their seems to be an abundance of them- taking over the world – I can now understand why the Aussies hate the cane toad so much!

The audition toads will do anything to get their own way.

An audition toad will walk into a room and the atmosphere will become flat and uncomfortable. They will sit down and look the casting director in the eye, with the mindset that they are god’s gift to the world and if you don’t let them through there will be hell on.

You will talk to a toad and whatever the topic that arises, the toad will always croak back with how they are the best. Time for the toad to perform- and it is a bland as the colour of their skin. But afterwards the smarmy smirk still lingers on their face. Naturally, the casting director will try and give an unbiased analysis of their performance. Yet this is no good for the audition toad- if there are no compliments the slime kicks in! First starts the compliments, and then the half heart felt reasons why they are right for the drama school or part they just auditioned for. Quite often the toad will attempt to flirt, yet their vulgar attitude and appearance would put off a wilder beast! The audition toad never gets the role.

Here is a simplified list of what not to do in an audition.

Walking into a room- Be confident and happy with your self.

Don’t…

  • Walk with your head lowered so the casting director can’t see your face. First impressions count!
  • Jump into the room as if you just won the lottery.
  • Walk into the room as if it were your own home.

Meeting the casting director- shake hands, if possible, with a well mannered hello.
Don’t…

  • Make quirky remarks as if the casting director was your best mate.
  • Avoid making eye contact and mumble words. Speak clearly
  • Shake the casting directors hand with a great big smile, speaking at 100mph till their wrist drops off!
  • Walk in, shake hands in an aggressive or smarmy manner, with a toad like attitude.

When delivering your audition piece- stay calm and act from the heart.

Don’t…

  • Imitate apiece done by some one else- you will get caught out!
  • Be afraid to experiment with the piece, both physically and vocally.
  • Over do it, please! – Act from what you feel, don’t try attach an emotion to the line, it should come naturally.
  • Keep it bland- stop thinking you know it – be it!

When receiving feed back from the director, and saying good bye- stay composed, be happy with your performance, shake the casting directors hand and leave with your head held high.

Don’t…

  • Lick A*se! Be your self. A casting director will can tell when you are not speaking from the heart
  • Say nothing. If you don’t interact with a casting director how will s/he be able to work with you?
  • Not let the casting director speak! You’ve had your time now let them have theirs.
  • Try and be slimy, smarmy or just generally linger around in the room, your performance may of impressed the casting director, therefore don’t give the casting director an excuse not to choose you!
Hopefully this article has given you an insight into my pet hates! Oh yeah and given you advice on what not to do in an audition.

Don’t mess up your audition! Things you must not do or say in an audition. Don’t become an audition toad!

Lets get the picture straight, you either at an audition or maybe your lucky enough to be at your first company rehearsal and the director sits the ‘potential cast’ down states his intentions and what he/she wants from the play. Then says, “Ok we will have a read through of the script”... Read More »
