The National Youth Theatre is a registered charity which provides opportunities to young people aged between 13 and 21 the chance to develop their creative and social skills through the medium of the theatrical arts. The company invites all young people who are residents of the UK to apply each year for courses in Acting, Stage Management, Lighting and Sound, Costume and Scenery and prop building. Courses run in the school holidays at Easter, Summer and Autumn half terms. The company also mounts a number of high quality productions each year in a range of venues across the UK and sometimes abroad. There is also a busy outreach programme which works with young people who are disadvantaged or do not have easy access to participation in the arts.
The company was founded in 1956 and in that time, thousands of young people have taken their first steps in the theatre. Some former members include Sir Ben Kingsley, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Derek Jacobi, Orlando Bloom,Chiwetel Ejiofor, Daniel Craig, Douglas Hodge, Paula Wilcox, Kate Adie, Catherine Tate, Matt Lucas and David Walliams to name but a few. But for every well-known person, there are many others who have gone on into a range of successful careers. For further details, please visit www.nyt.org.uk
