More and more companies are using role-play as a tool of choice in developing their employees people skills in the work place, in areas such as sales and customer services. Also role-play and forum theatre is being used widely now in the management sector, to develop and improve managerial skills.
Using role-play in employee training allows the participant to experiment with their existing skills and test out new methods of dealing with certain situations in the work place. By learning in as real of environment as possible.
The truthfulness of the situation is really dependent on the actor playing the role opposite the participant. Therefore a well trained actor, or professional in this field with the required improvisation skills is best to use when using role-play as a means of training and development.
Role Play Theatre companies now days try to reduce the amount of participants in a session taking or increase the number of actors used. This is done because tin the 1990s there was a tendency to stuff as many people as possible into a session, therefore the participant did not have a chance to test there skills they have been learning in the session, instead groups would have to analyse a group leader for example instead of experiencing the situation them selves.
Also in sessions actors now give feed back on how the participant coped in the given situation. The actors can describe how the participant affected their emotional state. This therefore can be used to help the participant refine and adjust the strategies and techniques they are using in conversation
The use of role-play within a workshop, is usually situated at the end of the session so the participants can be taught the theory before they practise. This therefore means the participant can learn many concepts and experiment with them to find out which method suites them best.
As a direct cause of this however, is the fact that it diminishes the application of role-play as well as the involvement of actors themselves. As well as this, it effectively puts a greater strain on actors to apply their newfound skills, from what they learnt in a short length of time. The learning process differs from person to person, so these factors need to be considered, however the most important thing to consider within the process itself, is the actual application of new skills.
The significance of role-play within a workshop itself is beneficial to those participating. The breakdown of the subject into sections, also allows participants to absorb the information easier, and the learning process is adapted to the concepts that role-play employs, and also enables participants to gain a real insight to the process, learning the mistakes, as well as the techniques. Through this, they also begin to comprehend the concepts and the strategies, along with the reasoning behind them, and in turn, this produces better results for all involved.
There are added befits attached to this process. Firstly the actors feel they are accepted as part of the team rather than just being there to role-play. This therefore means that he intimacy between actor and participant greatens and becomes less traumatic for either party, reducing pressure and allowing a more natural simulation
